    The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, will give people new choices for health insurance.

    The law creates a way for uninsured people to shop for a plan that works for themselves and their family. People with insurance can also consider some of these new plans.

    The next enrollment period is scheduled for November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015.  Residents eligible for state assistance through AHCCCS are able to enroll at any time.

    Enrollment period for Marketplace health insurance has ended and will reopen November 2014.  However, assistance is available throughout the year to assist with plan changes and updates.

      A person can get help signing up in over 180 different languages by calling the Federal Help Center at 1-800-318-2596. Operators are available  24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help with questions about the new law.

    There are a few other steps you can take to get ready now:none

    • Explore current options. You may be able to get coverage now through existing programs. Visit HealthCare.gov to learn more about health insurance for adults up to age 26 and programs for people and children in families with limited incomes.
    • Learn about different types of health coverage. Through the Marketplace, you'll be able to choose a health plan that gives you the right balance of costs and coverage. You can be better prepared if you understand the types of coverage you'll choose from.
    • Make a list of questions you have before it's time to choose your health plan. For example: "Can I stay with my current doctor?" or "Will this plan cover my health costs when I'm traveling?"
    • Make sure you understand how insurance works. You'll want to consider things like premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, copayments and coinsurance when exploring your options. Visit HealthCare.gov to learn more about how insurance works.
    • Gather basic information about your household income. Most people using the Marketplace will qualify to save money. To find out how much you're eligible for, you'll need income information like the kind you get on your W-2, pay stubs or tax returns.
    • Set your budget. There will be different types of health plans to meet a variety of needs and budgets. You'll need to figure out how much you want to spend on premiums each month.
    • Ask your employer if it plans to offer health insurance. If not, you may need to research insurance options through the Marketplace or from other sources.

    About the Law

    All private health insurance plans offered in the Marketplace will offer the same set of essential health benefits. none

    These essential health benefits include at least the following items and services*:
    • Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care you get without being admitted to a hospital)
    • Emergency services
    • Hospitalization
    • Maternity and newborn care (care before and after your baby is born)
    • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (this includes counseling and psychotherapy)
    • Prescription drugs
    • Rehabilitative services and devices (services and devices to help people with injuries, disabilities, or chronic conditions gain or recover mental and physical skills)
    • Laboratory services
    • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
    • Pediatric services


    Essential health benefits are minimum requirements for all plans in the Marketplace. Plans may offer additional coverage.
