Pima Animal Care Center will waive adoption fees for all companion animals Oct. 1 through Oct. 4 to reduce the high number of pets at the shelter and ease overcrowding. Those interested in adopting can visit the shelter, 4000 N. Silverbell Road, or one of four offsite adoption events at the PetSmart locations listed below.

The PetSmart locations will offer free cat and kitten adoptions Thursday through Sunday and bring along the dogs and puppies on Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Pima Animal Care took in more than 400 pets last week, sending the shelter’s total census to nearly 900 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens waiting for adoption or rescue. Additionally, the shelter has hundreds more pets in foster care and needs to make room for their return.

“We are proud to be the only shelter in our community that will never turn away a pet in need, but our conditions are becoming extremely crowded,” said Kristin Barney, PACC’s Chief of Operations. “We hope this will encourage the community to adopt one of our many deserving pets.”

Starting Oct. 5, new adoption fees for puppies and kittens will take effect and all pets less than 6 months old will have a $50 adoption fee. Pets older than 6 months will still have a $30 adoption fee. A $16 dog license fee may still apply. All PACC pets leave the shelter spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped, and come with a free vet visit.

The shelter is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Here are the locations for the PetSmart adoption events:

    • PetSmart at Oracle and Wetmore (cats, dogs, puppies and kittens)
    • PetSmart at Grant and Swan (cats, dogs, puppies and kittens)
    • PetSmart at El Con Mall – between Home Depot and Target (cats, dogs, puppies and kittens)
    • La Encantada at Skyline Drive/Campbell Road (dogs and puppies)
