Celebrate Ajo Community Center improvements and new dog park on July 4

The public is invited to the grand reopening of the renovated Ajo Community Center and the dedication of a new dog park at E.S. “Bud” Walker Park on Thursday, July 4.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors budgeted $1.3 million last year to repair, improve and spruce up eight community centers. Pima County Facilities Management conducted a comprehensive review of all the County’s community centers with the Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department to compile the list of recommended improvements.

Upgrades to the Ajo Community Center include:
  • Air conditioning and UV-protected windows
  • Ceiling tile replacement
  • Restroom upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act regulations
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • New fire alarm system
  • Interior and exterior paint
  • Parking lot resurfacing

District 3 Supervisor Sharon Bronson will attend the reopening and dedication at 290 W. Fifth St. in Ajo, which will begin at 10 a.m. and will include tours of the center, entertainment and refreshments.

The Ajo Community Center hosts a variety of services and programs including:
  • Kids and Parents Playtime
  • Youth sports, dance, cooking, scout and summer camp programs
  • Adult sports and fitness, and ceramic and stained glass classes
  • Exercise programs and weekday lunches for seniors
  • Public meeting space
