    Staff from the Environmental Education Division of Pima County's Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department will lead the activities. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Donations will be accepted.

    The event is co-sponsored by the Tucson Audubon Society ahead of the annual Southeast Arizona Birding Festival Aug. 7-11.

    Activities include:
    • Collecting and identifying the macroinvertebrates that live at Canoa Lake;
    • Studying owl pellets with Tucson Audubon Society;
    • Viewing bugs under black lights;
    • Exploring the lives of bats through hands-on activities; and
    • Learning how birds use their bills and beaks in feeding
    Since the restoration of the ranch’s pond in 2018, Canoa Ranch has become a birder’s paradise. Nearly 70 species are spotted regularly at the lake. Dozens of others are seasonal visitors.

    The entry gate to Historic Canoa Ranch is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for access to the newly restored Canoa Lake and the Anza Trail. Guided tours of the historic site are conducted Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10 and 11 a.m. Visit www.pima.gov/canoaranch for more info on programs and other guided tours.

    In 2001, Pima County purchased and began to restore the 4,800-acre Canoa Ranch complex with voter-approved 1997 and 2004 bond funds. Pima County opened the ranch headquarters to the public in March 2013. The property is managed by the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department.
