The Chuck Huckelberry Loop at Broadway and Speedway Boulevards will see impacts beginning Sept. 30 as part of sanitary sewer work being conducted by Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department and its contractor, B&F Contracting Inc.

The work along the Pantano River Park is expected to last up to eight weeks. Around Oct. 2, access ramps on the east bank at Speedway will be closed. Bicyclists are asked to walk their bikes in the area, and all users of the Loop should heed message boards, signage and flaggers.

Similar work begins on the east bank at Broadway approximately Oct. 23.

The project involves cured-in-place pipe lining repairs and manhole rehabilitation to the sanitary sewer system in an area bordered by Broadway Boulevard to the south, Speedway Boulevard to the north, Pantano Road to the east and Kolb Road to the west. The repairs are necessary as the sewer pipes in the area are nearly 50 years old and approaching the end of their useful life.

Starting Sept. 30, the contractor will begin the installation of a temporary, above-ground bypass system along the Loop from Broadway to Speedway. Bypass systems transfer sewage flow through temporary pipes so that uninterrupted service can be maintained during construction activities. The temporary sewer pipes will be placed on the eastern edge of the Loop path when necessary, and off the path when possible.

Motorists can expect road restrictions in the area. To stay up to date on the traffic restrictions, visit Wastewater’s Facebook page.
