Sorry, Max. You might be the most popular male dog name across the country, but for Pima County residents, it’s all about the Buddies and the Bellas.none

Through a computerized tally of more than 105,000 current dog licenses through Pima Animal Care Center, it’s clear that collectively we are partial to using human names for our pets, as opposed to names such as Snowy, Chips, Fluffy or Rascal that have more to do with color, food, coat or temperament.

Of the roughly 48,300 male dog names, Buddy topped the list with 1,086 entries, with Max and Charlie rounding out the Top Three.

Bella, like our adoption center alumna featured here, topped the list of the more than 56,800 female dog names, with Daisy and Lucy trailing.

Top 10 male names: Buddy 1,086; Max 950; Charlie 590; Rocky 474; Jack 446; Toby 439; Jake 428; Duke 359; Bear 344; Buster 332
