Pima County has joined the Million Hearts initiative to help prevent 1 millionheart attacks and strokes nationwide by 2022. Heart disease and stroke together are responsible for one in three deaths across the United States every year. In Pima County, heart disease is the second leading cause of death.

Heart disease:

million refers to several types of conditions which can affect the heart’s muscle, valves,
or rhythm.  The most common type in the United States is coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries which can cause severe chest pain and heart attack.

Stroke:

is a brain attack that occurs when blood flow to the brain becomes blocked. This can be caused either by a blood clot or by a burst blood vessel in or around the brain. Lack of blood flow during stroke can cause portions of the brain to become damaged, often beyond repair.

To help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, follow the ABCS:

A: Take aspirin as directed by your health care professional

B: Control your blood pressure

C: Manage your cholesterol

S: Don’t smoke
