    Department of Environmental Quality

    Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ), formed in 1989, serves Pima County by protecting public health and the environment. PDEQ operates programs to monitor air and water quality, hazardous waste, solid waste, and assist in waste minimization and pollution prevention. PDEQ also provides public outreach, education, and citizens' assistance; processes environmental permits; and responds to public complaints and inquiries with investigations and enforcement.

    Our Mission

    Preserve and protect the environment of Pima County for the long-term benefit of residents' health, welfare, safety, and quality of life. Identify and respond to environmental issues by providing public services including monitoring, enforcement, information, education, and solid waste management.

    The Water Program is comprised of multiple sections which address different issues regarding wastewater, drinking water, stormwater and well monitoring at TIAA Superfund Site.

    Code Compliance

    The Code Compliance Program is administered by the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) for the Pima County Development Services Department (DSD). PDEQ Code inspectors investigate reported code complaints and assist property owners in correcting any violations and maintaining their property in compliance with the Zoning, Building and Environmental codes.

    Air, Waste, Water Complaints

    PDEQ strives to identify and respond to environmental concerns in Pima County. PDEQ has regulatory authority over certain environmental issues, please read information regarding Environmental Complaints prior to submitting a complaint by phone (call (520) 724-7400 and ask to speak to a Complaint Coordinator) or through the online Environmental Complaint Form.

    Buffelgrass Complaints

    PDEQ, in coordination with other state and local agencies, is committed to addressing the serious threat posed by the spread of buffelgrass in the Sonoran Desert. The Pima County Board of Supervisors has recently adopted an ordinance to facilitate this effort. Please read the provided buffelgrass information prior to submitting a complaint by phone (call (520) 724-7400 and ask to speak to a Complaint Coordinator) or through the online Buffelgrass Complaint Form.

    Mold Complaints

    PDEQ does not have the authority to investigate or address mold concerns inside residences or businesses in Pima County. It is the property owner’s responsibility to determine if mold is present and if so, to properly remediate it. There are many mold remediation businesses you can hire to determine if mold is present in your home and to clean up the mold, if you are unable to do it yourself.

    In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has information and resources on their website that might be helpful, including ways to prevent and control mold, guidelines for cleaning up mold, and general information on mold and other indoor air quality topics.
