The City of South Tucson has five projects that are in part or wholly funded with 2004 GO Bond Funds. Construction of two of those projects have been completed. The remaining three have been fully designed. The City of South Tucson will request that additional construction funds be included in any future bond elections to construct the remaining three flood control projects.
The completed Flood Control Projects are:
- 26th Street from South 4th Avenue to South 5th Avenue – Additional drainage was connected into an existing underground facility along 5th Avenue. These improvements alleviated the ponding that results from stormwater run-off into the northwestern area of South Tucson.
- South 7th Avenue and West 34th Street – Additional drainage was provided to capture storm-water runoff at the intersection of south 7th Avenue between 34th and 35th Streets. An all-weather crossing was added to the intersection. These improvements help prevent damage to residential property and public right-of-way, and enable emergency vehicles to utilize 7th Avenue during storm conditions.
The three remaining Flood Control Projects are:
- East 40th Street from South 4th Avenue to South 10th Avenue and 38th Street – The project as designed will capture storm water that runs from the railroad tracks northwesterly to the Interstate 10 and Interstate 19 interchange. The improved drainage will tie into a large underground ADOT storm drain outlet. This project will mitigate drainage issues at a key commercial facility (Fiesta Mercado/Food City), and at the Valle del Sur residential development. The estimated construction cost is $2,887,000.
- South 7th Avenue and West 28th Street link to South 8th Avenue and West 26th Street – The project as designed improves drainage capacity near Ochoa Elementary School. The improvements will provide a safer route for pedestrians and enable emergency vehicles to utilize 7th and 8th Avenues north of 29th Street during storm conditions. The estimated construction cost is $2,500,000.
- South 2nd Avenue and East 32nd Street to South 3rd Avenue – The project as designed will capture storm-water that runs into 32nd Street and the Union Pacific Railroad. The improved drainage will connect into an existing underground drainage facility at 4th Avenue and 32nd Street. The estimated construction cost is $2,200,000.
