  • General Information Regarding Civil Lawsuits

The justice courts in Arizona have exclusive jurisdiction or the authority to hear all civil actions when the amount involved, exclusive of interest, costs and awarded attorney fees when authorized by law, is $10,000.00 or less. You may reduce a larger claim to $10,000 and waive the remaining amount. You may not split a claim and file two separate actions. You may file for the "court costs"in addition to the $10,000 maximum.

Civil lawsuits in Arizona are governed by the Justice Court Rules of Civil Procedure.  In a regular civil proceeding either party may be represented by an attorney. If you elect to represent yourself you have a responsibility to yourself and to the court to acquire sufficient knowledge of the court process and procedures, to complete the forms properly and to follow your action through to conclusion.

The Pima County Superior Court website provides a flowchart of the civil case process.  Please note that arbitration hearings and pretrial conference apply only Superior Court cases.

Please refer to the Court forms tab in this website for filing fees and forms.
