The community of Ajo has partnered with Local First Arizona to promote in-state tourism and rolled out the red carpet for the first Ajo Weekend Getaway earlier this month.

Cabeza Prieta rideAjo businesses put together a package that included lodging, suggested restaurants, and a variety of tours to choose from, including newly mapped mountain biking trails, the Second Saturday Farmers Market, the historic train depot and the renovated Curley School. The weekend also included a bike ride in the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge.

A survey of visitors who took advantage of the Oct. 10-12 getaway offer found a lot of satisfied customers.

    • 100 percent of them rated their stay at La Siesta Inn as “Outstanding.”
    • 75 percent said the food was “Very Good.”
    • 100 percent said the mountain biking trails were “Outstanding.”
    • Everyone who attended the Curley School/Garden Tour and the Cabeza Prieta hike rated them as “Outstanding.”
    • 100 percent thought the weekend was well planned, organized and well supported.
“It was an absolutely wonderful experience ... and we will be going back to Ajo again!!!” one visitor commented.

Fourteen people visited Ajo as a result of the promotion. The total reported spending was $2,055.

Bety Allen, executive director of the Ajo Chamber of Commerce, said another weekend getaway is planned for October 2015, along with a bike ride event at Organ Pipe National Monument in March.
