Please do your part to keep Pima County’s sanitary sewers flowing by not pouring grease down your drain.

Grease recyclingInstead of pouring that used turkey grease (or any other cooking grease and oils) down your drain, collect them in a can or jar and bring them to one of five convenient drop-off locations on Friday, Nov. 28.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Day-After-Thanksgiving Grease Collection and Recycling event. All cooking grease and oils dropped off on that date will be recycled into biodiesel – a cleaner-burning fuel.

Join the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department and our community partners for this year’s event. Pima County’s community partners for this event are Edge Group, Grecycle, Pima Association of Governments’ Clean Cities Program and the Town of Sahuarita.

    Event Schedule and Locations:

    • Date: Friday, Nov. 28
    • Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • East – O’Rielly Chevrolet, 6160 E. Broadway Blvd.
    • Midtown – City Council Ward 3 Office, 1510 E. Grant Road
    • Northwest – Pima Vocational High School, 5025 W. Ina Road
    • South – City of Tucson Water Plant #2, 1102 W. Irvington Road
    • Sahuarita – Sahuarita Town Hall Complex, 375 W. Sahuarita Center Way
When ordinary kitchen cooking grease and oils are poured down drains, they can clog pipes and cause a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO). SSOs are the backup of raw sewage in the street, the environment, or into homes and businesses.

Since the Day-After-Thanksgiving Grease Collection and Recycling event began in 2005, over 25,000 pounds of grease have been collected and recycled.

If you cannot make it to one of the collection sites on Nov. 28, or to one of the year-round sites, it is safe to dispose of cooking oils and grease in your household trash. Thank you for doing your part to keep our sewers flowing in Pima County.
