Colossal CavePIMA COUNTY – The Pima County Board of Supervisors last month voted to find a new operator for Colossal Cave Mountain Park. The county is drafting a Request for Proposal soliciting bids from potential new operators and wants the public’s input on the future of the park.

Two community meetings are planned in the Vail area:
    Dec. 16, 6-9 p.m.
    Cienega High School
12775 E. Mary Ann Cleveland Way

    Jan. 15, 6-9 p.m.
    Andrada Polytechnic High School
    12960 S. Houghton Road

The 2,400-acre county park includes its namesake, Colossal Cave, considered the largest “dry” cave of its kind in the United States, as well as historic buildings, a campground, hiking trails and environmentally sensitive riparian habitat. Declining attendance and other concerns prompted the board in 2013 to empanel an audit committee to review the park’s operations and make recommendations for improvements.

The board adopted the committee’s recommendations and county staff will present the findings of the audit committee at the community meetings and answer questions about the park and its future. A search committee will use the public feedback as guidance when drafting the parameters for the new-operator bids.
Besides the two public meetings, the public can also submit written comments about Colossal Cave Mountain Park to:

    Mike Holmes
    Operations Program Manager
    Pima Economic Development &Tourism
    33 N. Stone Ave, Suite 830,
    Tucson, AZ 85701

Or comments can be submitted by email to Mike Holmes.
It is hoped the RFP will be published by the end of February and a new operator ready to take over park operations when the current operator’s contract expires in August.
