The 1997 HURF Bond package approved $3.8M of bond funding for the widening of Kinney Road to four lanes with improved shoulders, roadside drainage and landscaping. The project was to reduce congestion and enhance safety along Kinney Road.
Three commercial properties in the vicinity of the Bopp intersection were acquired to accommodate the roadway expansion: 212-50-0020, 212-50-0030, and 212-50-005D. Relocation of businesses and demolition of some structures were required.
In FY 2015/16, Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is scheduled to start construction on the intersection improvements as part of their SR86 Ajo Highway Improvement plans. The other phases of this project remain on hold pending further consideration by private developers.
