Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation will be hosting a free “A Night Under the Stars” April 24 at the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa. Venus, Jupiter, the moon and a number of star clusters should be visible that night. Volunteers from the Sonora Astronomical Society will help visitors use telescopes for their celestial viewing and offer an educational introduction to the night sky.

“Canoa Ranch is a great spot for stargazing because it is such a nice, dark site,” said John Dwyer, president of the Sonora Astronomical Society. “We should have plenty to look at. The highlight will be the Orion Nebula, which should be visible briefly that night. It is a nursery for new stars and a real treat to see. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and give us a good night for viewing.”

The stargazing will last from 7 to 9 p.m., but visitors can come to the ranch at 6 p.m. to enjoy a self-guided tour of the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa. Docents will be on hand to share the fascinating stories of the people who lived and worked on the ranch. Children are welcome at this family-friendly event. Flashlights are recommended for after-dark walking and visitors can bring lawn chairs if they would like.
