For the 12th straight year, Pima County will be hosting the Western Regional Softball Tournament for Juniors. Twelve teams of 13 and 14-year-old girls will battle it out July 20 through July 31 to see who will advance to the Little League Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

The games will be held at Arthur Pack Regional Park, 9101 N. Thornydale Road for the fourth year.

The girls, who will be visiting from Arizona, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana and Hawaii, will be playing at least three games each, meaning they and their families will be in town for four to five days, said Carl Thompson, district administrator for Arizona District 5 Little League.

The teams and six umpires from out-of-state will be staying at the Omni Tucson National Resort, Thompson said.

“Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation is honored to have our Arthur Pack Regional Park chosen again to be the site of the Little League Western Regional Softball Tournament for Junior Girls,” said George Kuck, operations maintenance manager.

Arthur Pack Regional Park is a 505-acre park with 10 ball fields, public golf course (Crooked Tree Golf Course), ramadas, playgrounds and the recently completed Maeveen Behan Desert Sanctuary Trails System.

The park is one of several in the Pima County parks system large enough to host large youth tournaments. Youth and adult sports tournaments and sports tourism are significant components of Pima County’s Economic Development Plan.

Arthur Pack, Rillito Regional Park, which is undergoing a fields expansion giving it 11 soccer fields, and Kino Sports Complex, which boasts an 11,000 seat stadium, a 2,000 seat soccer stadium and professional quality baseball and soccer fields, are making Pima County a growing sports tourism destination.
