Sunnyside’s girls softball team advanced to the Little League Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Wash., with a 10-1 win over Thornydale last night in the Western Regional Softball Tournament for Juniors at Arthur Pack Regional Park.
Thornydale defeated Southern California in the first game to advance to the championship game against Sunnyside, the defending World Series champion.
The tournament began July 20 and featured teams of 13- and 14-year-old girls from Arizona, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana and Hawaii.
The park is one of several in Pima County’s Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation system large enough to host large youth tournaments. Youth and adult sports tournaments and sports tourism are significant components of Pima County’s Economic Development Plan.
