The Pima County Department of Transportation is currently in the construction stage of the Elephant Head Bridge. The project consists of removal of the existing concrete bridge girders, barriers, pedestrian railing and asphaltic pavement on the bridge deck. New precast concrete box beams will be installed along with a new concrete deck slab, traffic barriers and metal hand railing. The approach roadways to the bridge will be repaved to meet the new bridge superstructure.
The construction will require closure of the bridge but local traffic will use a detour along the south side of the bridge during the closure period.
Construction scheduled to start in late 2015. A public meeting will be scheduled later this fall.
