TUCSON, AZ – (Aug. 4, 2015) – Pima Animal Care Center announced today it is teaming up with Telemundo on a new pet adoption initiative – Clear the Shelters – on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The Clear the Shelters effort, part of a national initiative spearheaded by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal, pairs local television stations with animal shelters across the country to find new homes for homeless pets.

PACC catThe Pima Animal Care Center will be offering free adoptions that day, while other communities will be offering reduced fee adoptions or waiving pet spaying and neutering fees.

Eleven NBC-owned stations, 17 Telemundo-owned stations, the NBCUniversal-owned regional news network and more than 300 local animal shelters across the country will match up thousands of homeless pets with new homes. This initiative marks the first time that the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations have joined forces on an initiative like Clear the Shelters.

“We are thrilled to participate in Telemundo’s ‘Clear the Shelters’ nation-wide pet adoption initiative. This type of event reaches out to our entire community, reminding them that we have a lot of beautiful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens just waiting for their forever homes,” said Kristin Barney, chief operating officer of Pima Animal Care.

Locally, viewers will be able to watch special programming that raises awareness about the actual pet adoption day as well as issues, like the overpopulation of shelters in the Tucson and outlying areas on KHRR-TV Channel 40 Tucson. Moreover, Telemundo Tucson will engage viewers with news and information across various platforms, including on air during newscasts, online and via social media.
Telemundo Tucson / KTAZ-TV Channel 40 will be airing special live cut-in reports for Clear the Shelters on Saturday, August 15 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Additionally, Al Rojo Vivo’s Jessica Carrillo and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles’ (KVEA) Elva Saray, will host a 30-minute post-adoption drive special that will air on Saturday, August 22 on Telemundo Tucson that will recap the previous week’s national day of action.

Clear the Shelters began last year in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. More than 2,200 homeless animals were adopted that day, breaking a records for the most adopted animals in one day in North Texas.
