    Kids swimmingThe Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona is sponsoring a mud drag racing event Aug. 29 at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, 4823 S.6th Ave., as part of a Water Safety Expo marking August as drowning impact awareness month. Pima County’s Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department is one of nearly two dozen agencies that is part of the coalition sponsoring the event.

    Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the mud drag racing begins at 7 p.m. The event also will feature free water safety information, give-aways and interactive demonstrations as well as swim lessons, boating, CPR demonstrations, fire engines and more. Organizers also will share information on bathtubs, monsoons, spas, sun protection, drains, fencing, flood preparedness, rescue equipment and canals. 

    The water expo is free, but there is a charge for the mud drag racing. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 6 to 16; age 5 and under are free. First responders also get in free with proper ID. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or from Boot Barn, which has locations at 3776 S. 16th Ave., 3719 N. Oracle Road and 6701 E. Broadway Blvd.
