Judge FelixJudge Maria Felix was presented the Sherry Geisler Justice of the Peace Award by the Arizona Justice of the Peace Association at its annual conference earlier this month.

The award, named after the late Honorable Sherry Geisler of Round Valley Justice Court, recognizes those who provide outstanding service to the judiciary.

Judge Felix is the first Mexican-American woman elected by voters in Tucson. The former Pima County Consolidated Justice Courts presiding judge was instrumental in helping to develop the Animal Welfare Court and hosted an international webinar for judges and attorneys on that specialty court.

She currently serves on the Limited Jurisdiction Courts Committee and the Court Leadership Institute of Arizona committee. She served for two years on the Civil Rule update committee.

"The court is extremely proud of Judge Felix,” said Justice Court Administrator Doug Kooi. “She has long been recognized for her diligence and leadership here in Tucson.  Winning the Sherry Geisler Award is a wonderful achievement as it demonstrates the high regard her fellow judges throughout the state of Arizona have for her and her contributions both locally and statewide."

The award came as a “huge surprise,” Judge Felix said.

“I am really honored and humbled and grateful,” Judge Felix said. “I feel so lucky I have gotten to know so many good judges over the 10 years I’ve been a judge. I consider myself to be among excellent company.”
