Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) invites the community to bring its used cooking oil and grease to the Annual Grease Collection and Recycling Event on Jan. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at these participating locations:

    East O’Rielly Chevrolet 6160 E. Broadway Blvd
Central Tucson City Council Ward 3 1510 E. Grant Rd
Northwest Pima Vocational High School 5025 W. Ina Rd
South City of Tucson Water Plant # 2 1102 W. Irvington Rd
Sahuarita Sahuarita Town Hall 375 W. Sahuarita Center Way

“We are collecting used cooking oils, especially peanut oil that you would fry your turkeys with. Kitchen greases such as bacon, fat, and lard are great to bring also,” said Mike Kazz, president of Grecycle.

Since the event began in 2005, RWRD has partnered with Edge Group, Grecycle, Pima Association of Governments, and the Town of Sahuarita to make this event a success. To date, RWRD has collected approximately 28,000 pounds of used cooking oils and kitchen grease. After the event, the collected grease will get recycled into biodiesel, a cleaner burning fuel for the environment.

The event was originally held on the Day-After-Thanksgiving, but was moved to early January to accommodate grease collected throughout the holidays.

It began as part of RWRD’s efforts to teach the community how to properly dispose of used cooking oil and grease and prevent a sanitary sewer overflow, which is the backup of raw sewage into the street, a home, or a business.
