It has been reported recently that there have been confirmed cases of canine influenza in Pima County.
This is incorrect.
Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, Pima County’s Director of Veterinary Services, said that, at this time, no local, state, or national diagnostic lab has reported positive canine flu tests from Pima County. Dr. Wilcox has been in touch with numerous vets in the county and the
Office of the State Veterinarian. At this time, the source of the report of dog flu in Arizona or Pima County is unclear.
Dog owners who suspect their pet is exhibiting flu-like symptoms should consider taking their pet for evaluation by a veterinary provider.
The American Veterinary Medical Association has an
excellent webpage about dog flu, including a guide for pet owners to help them understand the illness, the risks of infection and strategies for preventing infection.
