Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) has issued an Order of Abatement to Granite Construction to cease the production of asphalt at the Granite Construction Co., Swan Road Plant, located at 9301 S. Swan Rd., Tucson, until such time as Granite can operate without causing objectionable odors.

Since yesterday PDEQ, Southwest Gas, 911, and Poison Control received heavy volumes of calls from individuals reporting the odor and expressing health concerns. Several Tucson Unified School District and Sunnyside Unified School District schools in the area were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

PDEQ worked with Tucson Fire Department, Tucson Airport Authority and other agencies to pinpoint the source of the odor yesterday and sent an inspector to investigate. PDEQ staff met with Granite employees and determined that the odor was emanating from a mix of asphalt being used at the Swan Road Plant. Since the odor has been affecting a significant portion of individuals in the area, PDEQ has issued an Order of Abatement to Granite to stop production of this asphalt until the cause of the odor can be mitigated.

PDEQ will work with Granite Construction to resolve this asphalt odor issue so the company can continue its work while protecting public health.
