  • DOT-53 - Old Tucson-Nogales Highway-Summit Neighborhood

    Total Actual Cost: $2,022,253
    Project Number:  CTR.4OTNHS
Funding Sources: 1997 HURF Bonds, RTA, City of Tucson, County HURF
    Completion Date: November 2015
Managing Dept.: Pima County Department of Transportation
    Project Map: GIS map

A new traffic signal was installed at the intersection of Nogales Hwy and Old Nogales Hwy, which serves more than 12,000 vehicles daily. Prior to this addition, there was no safe way to stop through traffic and allow left-turning traffic to access Nogales Hwy from Old Nogales Hwy.

In addition to the traffic signal, the intersection was upgraded to include crosswalks, streetlights and pedestrian facilities. Nogales Hwy was also widened to provide 6-foot paved shoulders on both sides of the road.

The construction results in improved safety, not only for motorists, but also for pedestrians. In addition, it increases intersection capacity and improves traffic operations.

Also included as part of this project was the installation of a new box culvert under Old Vail Connection Road approximately 500 feet east of Old Nogales Hwy. This drainage enhancement was necessary to improve the conditions at the cross of Franco Wash and Old Vail Connection.
