  • Roundabouts topic of public safety meetings

RoundaboutsIn April, the Pima County Transportation Department held five public hearings to discuss potential safety improvement projects, specifically on the installation of single-lane roundabouts, at these county intersections:
    • Sabino Canyon Road at Sunrise Drive
    • Bopp Road at Donald Avenue
    • Bopp Road at San Joaquin
    • Gates Pass at Kinney Road
    • Camino Loma Alta at Colossal Cave Road
    • Via Rancho Del Lago at Colossal Cave Road
    • Camino de Oeste at Linda Vista Boulevard
    • Picture Rocks Road at Sandario Road

The county selected these intersections based on traffic data, which shows an increased number traffic related accidents. Rather than install a traffic signal, four-way stop, or other type of traffic control, DOT proposed single-lane roundabouts, which the Federal Highway Administration promotes as an effective safety measure.

Funding for each of these improvement projects would come from federal transportation safety funds, which can’t be used for general road maintenance or pavement preservation.

All projects are still in the early planning stages. DOT will compile the feedback received at each of these public meetings and from this questionnaire to decide which projects to move forward.

If you were unable to attend one of these meetings, but would like to know more on the safety features provided by single-lane roundabouts, review this information and provide us your feedback. The deadline to complete the roundabout questionnaire is May 9.
