The 2016 season for the Pima County Swim Team Program hasn’t started and already staff knows they’ll need more participants at three of its south side pool teams, the Kino Tsunami, Los Niños Piranhas, and Manzanita Torpedoes.

The pools where the swim programs are located areare:
    • Kino Pool (Mulcahy YMCA), 2805 E. Ajo Way
    • Los Ninos, 5432 S. Bryant Ave., and
    • Manzanita, 5110 S. San Joaquin Ave.
“We’re not sure why, but year after year, these teams have fewer participants than our other pools,” said Grant Bourguet, swim team program manager.

SwimmersThis Novice Swim Team Program, led by Pima County’s Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation department, is open to kids ages 5 to 18 and costs only $20 for the whole summer, this includes all practices and swim meets.

Registration started May 21 and will continue through June 13, or until the team reaches max capacity. Team sizes vary between 60 to 100 participants, depending on the pool. In 2015, the Kino, Los Niños and Manzanita teams had about 50 percent less participants than the other pools.

The first practice starts May 31 for each of the county’s nine pools. Swim meets are held Saturday mornings or nights during June and July, beginning June 4.  Meets will continue through the Championship meet on July 23.
