The Pima County Board of Supervisors on June 7 voted unanimously to approve an incentive plan for Major League Soccer.

The board approved a $130,000 payment from the County’s contingency fund that will help Visit Tucson provide a sponsorship incentive to Major League Soccer clubs who stay, train and play games in Pima County during Major League Soccer preseason.

MLSPima County has provided an annual incentive since 2014 through Visit Tucson to Major League Soccer teams who conduct preseason at Kino Sports Complex, 2500 E. Ajo Way, during January and February.

In 2014, the Board of Supervisors provided $166,000 in similar incentives and $185,000 in 2015.

Hotel stays associated with the MLS preseason events at area resorts and hotels have increased over the past few years, with 4,661 total room-night stays. In 2015, room-night stays associated with MLS preseason were 3,630.

Pima County and Visit Tucson will consider revisions to the sponsorship incentive program and to the format of MLS preseason at Kino Sports Complex to optimize tourism in Pima County. Particular consideration will be given to the MLS preseason schedule in light of the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase and the Tucson Rodeo, two major events that also take place during this time.

Pima County’s relationship with MLS began in 2012 when FC Tucson Soccer, Tucson’s top-level semi-professional soccer team introduced MLS spring training and the Desert Diamond Cup to Kino Sports Complex for the first time. This annual competition draws over 20,000 fans and has an estimated economic impact of over $1.5 million each year. A recent study done by Gilt Edge Marketing shows that Tucson now ranks No. 25 among top U.S. markets for soccer.

In addition to hosting MLS soccer and other professional, semi-professional, and amateur sporting events, Kino Sports Complex provides a year-round multi-purpose venue for other types of community-related events, including concerts. Such versatility has allowed Kino to continue generating as much revenue as when Major League Baseball used the facility for Spring Training.
