Corben SharrahA Tucsonan who grew up riding bikes at Sports Park BMX, a Pima County-owned facility, has qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, taking place Aug. 5-21.

Corben Sharrah, 24, who qualified by winning all three of his heats in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials June 11 in Chula Vista, Calif., will be in Tucson June 21 for an Olympic Day event at Sports Park BMX, 6901 N. Casa Grande Hwy., beginning at 5 p.m.

Kids can meet Sharrah, an Amphi High School graduate, and ride for free. They should bring their own bikes and helmets to try out the track or use the loaner helmets that are on site. Loaner bikes are not available.

BMX became an Olympic sport for men and women in 2008. This is the first time Sharrah has qualified outright for the BMX Olympic team. Four years ago, he qualified as an alternate.
