PimaMaps is Pima County's next generation of web mapping system that will eventually replace the current MapGuide system. It is based on different technology than MapGuide and therefore has a much different look and feel.  This new technology allows us to expand the functionality of PimaMaps beyond what we were capable of doing with MapGuide.  MapGuide will remain available for a substantial amount of time while PimaMaps is fully implemented.

The Pima County Information Technology Department is pleased to introduce PimaMaps, Pima County's next generation web mapping system that will eventually replace the current MapGuide system.

The Main MapGuide Map, will remain available for a substantial amount of time while PimaMaps is fully implemented.

While MapGuide has been a very reliable web mapping system for many years, it is no longer supported by Autodesk. PimaMaps is based on new technology, provides a more robust and modern interface comparable to Google and Bing, and offers a richer set of functionality beyond what is available with MapGuide.

This version of PimaMaps has the following functionality and enhancements that are not available with MapGuide:

  • The map viewer is supported in multiple browsers, e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox.
  • Basemaps - The user can quickly switch between background reference maps, including aerial image basemaps.  Basemaps can contain enhanced cartography that includes many layers that are built in so that the user does not necessarily need to turn those layers on.
  • Drill-down Point Identify - The Point Identify tool will "drill through" all visible layers and return the results from each layer that the identify point intersects.
  • MapTips and search results provide output from all layers in a selected location (drill-down) so overlapping data no longer requires separate and dedicated reporting functionality, along with the ability to disable MapTips for individual layers.
  • Ability to change the display transparency for individual layers.
  • Robust search and filtering options. Filters can be applied per layer to narrow the layer's features that are displayed.
  • More robust feature interface, such as tableview versus list view, turning map tips on and off, and simple click to add or remove selected features.
  • User friendly selection and analysis tools and the ability to work with selections sets from analysis results.
  • Substantial set of graphics drawing tools.
  • Measurement tools dynamically display lengths and areas which can persist on the map when additional measurements are made.
  • Ability to plot coordinates by mouse clicks.
  • Ability to save your work as a "project",including user-added graphics and text, making it easier to start where you left off previously.  Multiple projects can be created and saved, and they can be shared amongst users.
  • Ability to change the drawing order of layers.
  • Ability to search for layers directly from the map legend.
  • Ability to determine which layers are viewable at the current map scale, e.g. layers that are "greyed out" in the legend are not viewable at the current map scale.
  • Includes a map overview window that displays a representation of the current map coverage area against a regional view, and can be used to move the map view to a different location.
  • Multiple print templates (a few to start with and others will be developed as needed).
  • Ability to export the map with georeferencing (projection/coordinate system) associated.
  • Customers can access metadata for a layer directly from the layer in the map legend.

Future functionality that will be added to PimaMaps includes:

  • Ability to change layer symbology.

This version of PimaMaps does not have the following functionality of the Main MapGuide Map and is being considered for a future release:

  • Access to the Pictometry oblique imagery -Pictometry and our PimaMaps vendor are working on the solution.
    • As a workaround, you can access Pictometry from a Parcel Detail page.
  • The Help documentation and instructions for creating mailing lists is still in development.
  • Customized reports that include multiple selected features:
    • The most typical MapGuide example is overlapping feature reports.
    • More examples include the formatted parcel and street reports.
      • While the data can be output in PimaMaps from select or search output, it’s not yet provided in a canned report format.
