  • Nearly $1M in improvements approved for Fairgrounds

    The Pima County Board of Supervisors August 2, unanimously approved a plan to renovate the Pima County Fairgrounds Old Pueblo Hall and Pima RV Park.  The Southwest Fair Commission will provide funding for the $960,000 in renovations at the hall. 

    Fairgrounds“Pima County is proud of the accomplishments of the Southwestern Fair Commission and applauds their forward-thinking vision to invest in capital improvements that help grow their economic impact in our region,” said Tom Moulton, Pima County Attractions and Tourism Director. 

    The planned work includes insulating the entire 61,000-square-foot building, installing moveable dividers to section-off the interior space, install sound systems and new restrooms. 

    Additional work includes adding 100 full RV hook-up spaces, and an office facility with laundry, restrooms and showers. 

    The facilities improvements, consistent with the long-term plans, are funded with proceeds from the Fair and other events at the Fairgrounds.  

    Attendance at the annual Pima County Fair has grown dramatically, having nearly tripled in the last 15 years. In 2016, more than 318,000 people attended the Fair.
    The Southwestern Fair Commission, Inc., is a non-profit, private corporation, the County established in 1975 to operate the fairgrounds and the Pima County Fair.  
    All profits earned from operations of the Fairgrounds and annual Pima County Fair are put back into facility improvements.  

    Over the years, the commission has made over $2 million in facilities improvements.

    Those improvements include: 
    • Sunset Cantina Bar and Grill remodeling and restaurant addition, including a full kitchen, bar and restaurant
    • Covered beer garden
    • Asphalt at the fair parking entrances, office parking lots and midway
    • Stage expansion
    • Expansion of parking entrances and additional parking gates for fair traffic
    • Laundry facility to support RV Park operations
    • Electronic billboard at Houghton and Brekke roads to provide advertising and directional information for ingress/egress
    • Phone and internet infrastructure improvements.
