Unlined concrete sewer pipe, initially designed to last 50 years, may last only 35 to 40 years when high levels of hydrogen sulfide and corrosion are present. The Wastewater Reclamation Department inspected unlined concrete pipe, as well as other older reaches of the system, in order to identify sections of the system that have deterioration. More than 60 separate projects have been completed under this Large Line Rehabilitation project, including emergency repairs, rehabilitation of siphon structures, and replacement of deteriorated structures or facilities with upgraded structures or gravity lines to reduce odors.
