Upcoming Trailhead Closures

The following trailheads will be closed to the public on the dates provided to perform pavement work on the parking lots
  • Camino del Cerro Trailhead: Closed March 28-29, 2023
  • Painted Hills Trailhead: Closed April 11-13, 2023
  • Sarasota Trailhead: Closed May 8-9, 2023

Trails Volunteer Opportunities

Overnight Parking Permits

Parking in select trailheads is allowed after hours with a parking permit. No after hours parking is allowed at the other trailheads. Trailhead parking permits are available for free.

The following trailheads require a parking permit:
  • Bear Canyon
  • El Camino del Cerro
  • Iris Dewhirst Pima Canyon
  • Richard McKee Finger Rock
  • Ventana Canyon

Trailhead Guidelines

  • Be aware of seasonal weather conditions and take an ample supply of water with you.
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times; please clean up after your dog on trails that allow dogs. Please be aware that not all trails allow dogs. See Dog Friendly Trails tab for more info.
  • Stay on designated trails.
  • No motorized vehicles or e-bikes permitted on trails.
  • Do not litter – pack it in, pack it out.
  • Trailheads are for trail access only; no loitering at trailheads or in other areas.
  • No alcohol.
  • It is illegal to remove or disturb any natural or cultural resources; no geocaching.
  • No commercial activity unless permitted by NRPR.
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and apply sunscreen; wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes and know your route.
  • Hike with a friend.
  • Inform someone where you are going and when you expect to return; know your limitations.
  • Carry a cell phone but be aware that reception may not be available in all areas.
  • Be aware of cacti and venomous animals.
  • Do not feed wildlife.

Separate Regulation for Public Lands and Parks

Please be aware that the parks and natural areas you enter from the trailheads have their own rules and regulations. Please familiarize yourself with them and follow all permitting requirements and regulations.
Dogs on a leash are welcome at most Pima County parks. There are a few trails and trailheads where dogs have been prohibited because of past problems over conflicts with other users, habitat protection issues and at the request of other jurisdictions. These trails usually lead to existing trails closed to dogs on other public lands.

You and your on leashed canine friend are encouraged to use the Pima County trails and dog parks listed below.

  • Star Valley Park
Please remember that Pima County Code (Chapter 6.04.030) requires dogs to be leashed and under control and also requires pet waste to be immediately picked up and properly disposed of in a sanitary manner. This applies to public spaces such as parks, trails, The Loop, open space, nature resource areas, river beds and most every public space except “dog parks”.
