    The Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department is hiring lifeguards for its Manzanita Pool at 5110 S. San Joaquin Ave. and other south side pools, and is offering the training required for the positions starting Saturday, June 1.

    LifeguardsIf you have already taken American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and are certified, you are eligible to be hired and should contact Andrew Ivy at 520-877-6126 or Grant Bourguet at 520-877-6109.

    The department employs approximately 110 lifeguards, water safety instructors, coaches, water aerobic instructors, and principal lifeguards each year to work at its nine swimming pools across the County.

    Lifeguards are paid $10.81 per hour for up to 40 hours per week.

    If you have not had the training, it is being offered by Pima County at Manzanita Pool on June 1-6. Material covered will include American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, including First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. The training fee is $100 payable to Pima County NRPR no later than at the June 1 class.

    Participants must be at least 16 years old and must be able to swim at least 300 yards continuously (using breaststroke and freestyle), tread water for two minutes without support and without stopping, and successfully complete a timed 10-pound brick retrieval.

    Lifeguard Training June 1-6
    • Saturday, June 1, 9:45 a.m.-4 p.m.: Prerequisites, intro to class, videos
    • Monday, June 3, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Water skills, primary and secondary assessments
    • Tuesday, June 4, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: CPR/AED training, start first aid
    • Wednesday, June 5, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Continue first aid, continue with water skills, back boarding
    • Thursday, June 6, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Complete back boarding, written exams, final water skill scenarios
