Uninstalling the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer

There's generally no need or reason to uninstall the MapGuide Viewer once you have it installed. However, if you are having installation problems, it may be a good idea to try to uninstall a previous version of the MapGuide Viewer.

Uninstalling the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control (Internet Explorer)

Follow the directions below to uninstall the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control. When you think you have deleted or removed the Autodesk Active X control see "Testing to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is fully uninstalled" below to be sure it's really uninstalled.

There are three methods that should be tried in sequence until it's proven that the MapGuide Viewer has been removed:

  1. Using Add/Remove Programs
    • Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Change or Remove Programs button or the Install/Uninstall tab (whichever you see for your version of Windows).
    • If "Autodesk MapGuide(R) Viewer ActiveX Control" appears in the list of installed programs, click on it, click Add/Remove, and then follow the instructions on the screen. If "Autodesk MapGuide(R) MapGuide Viewer ActiveX Control" does not appear in the list of installed programs, continue with the next step.
  2. Removing from the Downloaded Program Files folder
    • In Windows Explorer, double-click the Windows\Downloaded Program Files (or WINNT\Downloaded Program Files) folder, right-click the ActiveX control you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    • When you are prompted to remove the software, click Yes.
  3. Deleting the mgaxctrl.dll file
    • If the first two methods don't remove the Mapguide Viewer ActiveX Control, then search your hard disk(s) for the mgaxctrl.dll and/or mgaxctrl.inf files. If one or more mgaxctrl files are found, you can simply delete them or, better yet, rename the file(s) in case you want the file(s) back for some reason.

Testing to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is fully uninstalled

Test to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is fully uninstalled by trying to access a MapGuide map (taking care not to install again!). Or check the MapGuide Viewer section on the Display MapGuide Environment page. If MapGuide is still working, try re-booting and test again to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is really removed from your system.
