  • Pretrial Services director awarded for work in criminal justice

Domingo P. Corona, Director of the Pretrial Services Division at the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County, has received the 2017 Member of the Year Award from the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) for his extensive contributions to the field of pretrial justice.
The first Arizona recipient of this award since its inception in 1984, Corona received the award on September 11 at NAPSA’s annual conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.  Pima County Superior Court Presiding Judge, Hon. Kyle A. Bryson, praised Corona: “We are very proud of Domingo. Under his dedicated leadership, Pretrial Services provides a vital benefit to the citizens of Pima County and Arizona, and his expertise and knowledge sets the standard for pretrial service professionals nationwide.” Corona
Corona began his career in the field of Pretrial Services in 1998, entered his first leadership role in 2000, and since that time has been pivotal in helping Pima County build one of the strongest pretrial justice programs in the country.

In large part because of pretrial justice procedures in place and originated under his guidance, Pima County was one of only ten sites nationwide selected by the MacArthur Foundation in 2016 to receive a $1.5m targeted assistance grant, designed to create a safer, more impartial, and more effective local justice system.  Corona remains a steering committee member of that program’s core planning team.
As Division Director, Corona, who holds a master’s degree in justice management from the University of Nevada, Reno, oversees a staff of more than 60 pretrial officers and staff members.  His key roles in the development and implementation of pretrial release standards have brought him both state and nationwide recognition, and his integral role in the development of automation and programming in the pretrial field set the bar for several other state and national jurisdictions.

In acknowledging his achievements, Ronald G. Overholt, Administrator of the Superior Court, commended Corona’s “extraordinary commitment to advancing the mission and vision of justice, cooperation and education in the pretrial services field.”
In addition to his myriad of duties for the court, Corona currently serves on a subcommittee focused on developing statewide measurements for all 15 Arizona counties, and co-chairs the Arizona Pretrial Education Subcommittee.

Additionally, Corona served as a member of the National Standards on Pretrial Release writing team, was appointed a member of the National Institute of Corrections’ Pretrial Executive Network in 2015, and currently co-chairs the NAPSA Communications Committee.  He has presented and served as a facilitator at state and national conferences.
Corona was appointed Southwest Regional Director of the NAPSA Board of Directors in September 2017.
