  • New Administrator joins Justice Court

Pima County Consolidated Justice Court welcomes a new administrator.

Lisa Royal started in the position last month, replacing Doug Kooi who retired in February. Royal previously served as Justice Court Administrator from 2005 to 2013.
“When the court administrator position became vacant I was eager to ‘return home’ both for professional as well as personal reasons,” she said.

Royal left Justice Court in 2013 to serve as Justice of the Peace in Green Valley. She said the comparatively slow pace of work on the Green Valley bench, attributable to a decline in case filings, prompted her to return to Justice Court.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as a JP but having worked in the Superior Court and Justice Court I was pretty used to a fast-paced environment,” she said.

Royal said she’s excited to work with the enthusiastic Justice Court staff in the new Pima County Public Service Center, Justice Court having vacated the Old Pima County Courthouse in 2015.

Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Royal moved to Tucson with her family when she was one-year-old.

Royal earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration/criminal justice from UA and a master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California.

She previously worked at Pima County Juvenile Court and then for the Los Angeles Municipal Court. Later, Royal worked as a Case Management Analyst for Arizona Supreme Court before moving to Pima County Superior Court and eventually Justice Court.
