Near the summit of Mount Lemmon the picturesque village of Summerhaven stands as an escape from the heat of the summer and as a holiday retreat in the winter. The attraction draws nearly a million visitors each year, making it frequently the site of congestion, parking and access issues.ski valley

To help alleviate these issues, Pima County plans to study and identify traffic congestion, parking and access relief possibilities in the Summerhaven area.

On April 3, the Pima County Board of Supervisors approved a memorandum of understanding with the Pima Association of Governments to study traffic congestion issues in Summerhaven. The study is funded by a $50,000 grant from the Pima Association of Governments as part of the Project Development Activities Fund (PDAF).

“We are pleased that the full Board of Supervisors approved this study of traffic and other issues in and around Mt. Lemmon’s Summerhaven community,” said District 4 Supervisor Steve Christy. “Traffic congestion has been a source of great concern for residents and visitors to ‘Pima County’s Playground’ for decades, and we are optimistic that the study will enable a pathway toward solving this major problem affecting everybody’s favorite ‘Sky Island.’”

The Summerhaven Congestion Management Concepts study will identify options to mitigate traffic congestion, parking and access issues, which will benefit residents and tourists in the Summerhaven area. Concepts might include additional parking, roadway or trail concepts that would enhance the area use while relieving current congestion issues. The results of this study will be used to determine short-term and long-term mitigations that can be prioritized for future projects and funding.
