The environmentally sensitive roadway way design provisions were developed in 2001 in response to growing concern from the community about potential conflict between preserving environmentally sensitive areas, transportation design and construction practices, and the ongoing need for infrastructure improvements. With input from the community, roadway engineers, wildlife biologist, cultural resource experts, and landscape architects, the environmentally sensitive roadway design guidelines where developed to better assist the roadway design team in accounting for biological , cultural, and historical resources within a roadway corridor.
