File: Tucson birthday celebrationRichard Elías, Pima County Board of Supervisors Chairman, will emcee a free celebration of the City of Tucson’s 243rd Birthday Party on Monday, August 20. The festivities are from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at La Cocina Restaurant, 201 N. Court Ave.

Live music, a taco bar and a birthday cake and no-host drinks enliven the annual event. Local historian Ken Scovill leads a free tour of the Presidio District at 7:30 p.m.

The Tucson-Pima County Historical Commission and the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum are sponsors. The six flags that have flown over Tucson’s history will be presented at the event. Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Council Member Regina Romero will speak.

Chairman Elías, a seventh-generation Arizonan and a fifth-generation Tucsonan, recognizes the importance of our history in shaping our present and future. The city grew from a native community that had thrived here for many centuries. The diversity we have enjoyed since developed an ethos and a culture that are unique, vibrant, and respectful of our past.

Additional activities will include the unveiling of new sign outside the Presidio Museum, 196 N. Court Ave., starting at 4:15 p.m.

Parking is available at various downtown locations; fees may apply.
