  • DOT-57 Square Tube Breakaway Signposts

    Total Cost: $1,172,649
    Project Number:  CTR.4STBSP
    Funding Sources: 1997 HURF Bonds
    Completion Date: June 2017
    Managing Dept.: Transportation
    Project Map: County-wide

Existing U-channel signposts were replaced with square tube signposts having a breakaway feature.  Square tube signposts improve safety and reduce maintenance costs on Pima County roadways.

    Features included the following:

    • The advantages of square tube posts are excellent flexibility in mounting options, greater loading capacity over U-channel, the ability to mount signs on 4 sides of the post, and the ability to replace damaged posts quickly.

    • A square shape, typically perforated by mounting holes at 1-inch spacing, characterizes this post type.  Standard square tube post size for Pima County DOT is 2” x 2”.  The breakaway feature for square tube posts (Traffic Engineering Division Signing Standards Detail 8-3) improves safety.

    • Disadvantages include a moderately higher cost per installation over U-channel.

The square tube breakaway signpost program was a multi-year approach and Traffic Engineering staff performed all work.  The number of square tube posts installed each year varied from year to year depending upon the availability of field staff.  Yearly funding was flexible to shrink or swell in order to coincide with staff availability.

More than 8,750 square tube posts were installed.
