A three-part project, recommended by the Neighborhood Reinvestment Oversight Committee, was approved by the Pima County Board of Supervisors.

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department carried out the Intergovernmental Agreement Scope of Work including the resurfacing of the basketball court and installing shade canopies at Santa Rosa and San Cosme Parks.

As the neighborhoods’ first priority, the basketball court resurfacing project included shot-blasting, concrete acid- etching, primer coating and crack filling, acrylic resurfacing, color coating and striping. It was completed in April 2017. The San Cosme Park canopy adjacent to the City of Tucson Fire Department on Cushing Street was completed in August 2017. The Santa Rosa canopy project was completed in June 2018, after delay in securing approval from the Tucson Unified School District for access to and encroachment on their property. Design and installation of both canopies provides coverage of approximately 1,200 SF at each site. Site work, lighting and irrigation modifications were also provided.

All three projects address the community’s initial proposal to enhance facilities frequently used by youth and families for weddings, social functions, school activities and visitors to the annual Gem and Mineral Show. Both the Barrio Viejo and Barrio Santa Rosa Neighborhoods supported these projects. Fighting against gentrification, crime and poverty, the neighborhoods expressed appreciation for this investment for which they express pride and exhilaration.
