  • County to be part of Cyclovia Tucson April 7

Area residents and visitors can bike, run, walk and skateboard -- all in the middle of the street, if they like -- at Cyclovia Tucson, taking place April 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The route runs between Banner - University Medical Center near Warren Avenue and E. Lester Street to the Warehouse Arts District at Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street.

Several Pima County programs will be taking part in the day's festivities. The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality's Clean Air Program and the Pima County Health Department will have booths at Catalina Park on Fourth Avenue south of East First Street.

At the Clean Air Program's booth, participants can play an interactive Green Poetry Creation Game to spark eco-actions, give the Spin-N-Learn Wheel of Wisdom a spin to increase knowledge on environmental topics, and complete a "Healthy Air Is In Our Hands" pledge card for a chance to win $100!

The Health Department will have representatives on hand from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, the Teen Safe Driving Program and REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health).

In addition, the Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department and Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation can be found on East University Boulevard near Fifth Avenue. And the Pima County Public Library's Bookbike will fit in with all the other bikes at Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street.

The three-mile stretch will feature plenty of food vendors and other activities. Cyclovia Tucson started in 2010 as a grassroots effort led by the city of Tucson, Pima County, the YMCA and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Living Streets Alliance eventually became the lead organizer. The small annual event has grown to a twice-yearly celebration with a combined crowd of 70,000.
