  • NR-16 Sunnyside Airport Wash Walking Path

    Total Actual Cost: $113,385
    Project Number: CCDN97SUN
Funding Sources: 1997 General Obligation Bonds
    Completion Date: November 2017
Managing Dept.: Tucson Parks & Recreation
    Project Map: GIS Map

A 10-foot wide walking path with striping and signage was installed on the south bank of Airport Wash.  The path extended from South Liberty Avenue to South Sixth Avenue. New crossing signs were installed on Liberty and Missiondale Road.

During a Sunnyside Neighborhood Association meeting, the City Project Manager outlined bid alternates and potential revisions to the original scope of work as preliminary estimates exceeded available funding. They approved proceeding with design and permits for the entire project with various alternates selected for implementation with the current funding.  The project was revised to also utilize an existing asphalt alley in the middle of the site.  The neighborhood association also approved a reduction in path width from 12 feet to 10 feet as a cost-saving measure.

As stated in the neighborhood’s original bond proposal, their primary concern is the reduction of crime and creating positive change for a safer, more engaged neighborhood. This project provides a safe route to school for local youth, and for families to safely exercise away from motor vehicles. Youth will be encouraged to adopt and help maintain the path which is a connector between 6th Avenue and 12th Avenue.
