    Pima County and Technology-Based Transportation

The Pima County Transportation Department uses advanced technologies, data, and the hard work of over 200 employees to manage nearly 2,200 miles of roadways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, transit services and infrastructure.

Our Technology-Based Transportation Vision focuses on the evaluation and implementation of new strategies, materials and technologies to provide and maintain an efficient, safe, sustainable and equitable multimodal transportation system. Technological advancements will be leveraged to optimize current transportation system performance through supply- and demand-side solutions.

Mobility-on-Demand (MOD) technologies will provide more efficient travel options and real-time travel information for users when developed. For more information about our vision, MOD and other technologies, click on the Technology-Based Transportation section below.

Pima County is implementing a 10-year plan to fix all roads.  We first measured pavement conditions to determine which roads need repair.  Arterial and collector roadways are prioritized based on the highest return on investment.  For local roads, the most deteriorated are prioritized first.  For more details, click on the "Roadways and Pavement" above.

Pima County roadway improvements incorporate the latest standards and technologies to improve safety and traffic flow.  Our projects include facilities for all users, including pedestrians and bicyclists and transit riders, where applicable.  Our Mobility-On-Demand approach will make it easier to choose the best time and travel mode for your trip.

SeeClickFix is the latest user-friendly way to report pot holes or other transportation concerns via your smart phone.  As Mobility-on-Demand technologies develop, roadway conditions and issues reported through SeeClickFix or other apps will be updated in real time to assist the traveling public.

Development impact fees help fund needed capacity improvements caused by new growth.  Other permit fees ensure public safety and access for all users.

We continually measure and analyze traffic and safety data.  We are currently developing computer models that can evaluate the entire transportation system at once and determine hot spots.  Future models will be able to test and simulate improvements to identify the best use of limited funds.

Smart Transportation is using technology and data to improve transportation and expand travel choices. It includes ride-sharing and on-demand travel, smarter traffic signals, and autonomous vehicle technology. Pima County is developing data-based tools to reduce congestion, improve travel options and plan future investments where most needed.

We use traffic and safety data and other metrics to evaluate our system and plan future projects.  The continuation of RTA funding will ensure that future transportation improvements will continue until state and federal funding is increased.

Pedestrian and bicycle facilities and transit service are important to providing safe travel options, reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality and improving public health.
