The Pima County Board of Supervisors; Supervisor Ray Carroll, District 4; and Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation invite the public to celebrate Anza Days on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa.

Anza DaysCongressman Raúl M. Grijalva, who lived on the ranch as a young boy, will open the event at 9 a.m.

Anza Days are held in partnership with the Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona, Inc., Have Some Fun and the Santa Cruz Bicycle Group.

The event, which runs until 1 p.m., includes a guided tour from 9 to 10:30 (reservations required) or self-guided tours of the historic ranch. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the Anza Trail Coalition Color Guard and vendors and information booths related to the history of Canoa Ranch and the people who’ve lived there.

Food and drink will be available for purchase. Please see and share the attached flier.

In 2001, Pima County purchased and began to restore the 4,800-acre Canoa Ranch complex with voter-approved 1997 and 2004 bond funds. The Board of Supervisors voted to designate the property the Raúl M. Grijalva Canoa Ranch Conservation Park.

Pima County opened the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa to the public in March. In the 1920s Levi Manning gave this name to the ranch headquarters of his extensive cattle operation.

When Juan Bautista de Anza, a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Spanish cavalry and commander of the Tubac Presidio, led a 240-person expedition to northern California in 1775-76, the group spent its first night at the paraje, or campsite, at La Canoa.

Each year, Anza Days are held along the expedition route at various locations in Arizona. This is the inaugural event at Canoa Ranch.
