  • Tips to reduce your sewer bill as winter months approach

    This holiday season, a little bit of water conservation now can result in the gift of lower sewer bills next year. none

    The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department calculates a customer’s fees for the following billing year, which begins each July 1, based on that household’s water consumption during the winter months.

    Sewer bills are based on water consumption during the “reading months” of December, January and February, selected because they are typically the lowest three consecutive months of water usage during the year.

    To generate the lowest possible sewer charges during the next billing year, which begins July 1, 2014, make a special effort to conserve, through actions such as:
    • turning off the water while brushing your teeth or washing dishes;
    • installing low-flow appliances; • finding and repairing any water leaks in your toilets and sinks;
    • modifying showerheads and other faucets with low-flow devices;
    • maintaining outdoor irrigation systems; and
    • taking your vehicle to a commercial car wash instead of washing it at home.

    Low-income customers also may be able to offset their sewer bills through the department’s Sewer Outreach Subsidy Program. Depending on income and household size, low-income customers may quality for a partial discount of 25, 50, or even 75 percent on their monthly sewer fees.
