  • PACC’s pets get big assist from Procurement

The Pima County Procurement Department provided comfort and care to our furry friends through its Ben’s Bells program in July.

Taking to heart the theme of “How do we show kindness to the Earth and its creatures,” Procurement dedicated its monthly Ben’s Bells campaign to assisting with the needs of the Pima Animal Care Center.

“We know with COVID, and the (Bighorn) fire, there are additional issues that people have been having surrounding their pets,” said Procurement’s Nancy Page. “So we decided we would start right here at home with the theme of kindness to animals. … If we can’t adopt or foster them, then we’re going to try to make their life there as nice as possible.”

From large bags of dog food, big packs of canned cat food, boxes of treats, toys, bowls, dishes, blankets and more, Procurement’s food-and-supply drive took a bite out of PACC’s wish list and made a difference in the lives of the animals in the shelter -- and beyond.

“I would call it very successful,” Page said. “And we know some of the stuff that we gave them will go to people who are fostering pets, and that’s great.”

Procurement also distributed to staff “Be Kind to Animals” cards that included animal care tips and resource information on who to contact to report animal cruelty, a stray dog or injured wildlife. Employees were encouraged to keep the card in their car or wallet so they’ll have the information ready when they see an animal in need.

In January, Procurement implemented the Ben’s Bells Kind Colleagues Program to augment its employee-training program and promote team building and morale. The department’s Kindness Ambassadors -- Nichole Caballero, Matt Sage, Isabel Villanueva and Page -- provide training materials to staff and introduce a Kindness Activity. That includes Kindness Notes, which are given to staff and posted on the Kindness Board in Procurement’s break room to recognize someone who commits an act of kindness.
