The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s (PDEQ) Clean Air Program launched the #ThisIsCleanAir Photo Challenge Sept. 1 to encourage individuals to share ordinary (and extraordinary) actions they can take to improve air quality in our community.

The deadline to submit family-friendly photographs is Sept. 30. Use the hashtag #ThisIsCleanAir and send to Facebook or Twitter with the tag @PimaDEQ, or to Instagram with the tag @Pima_County. Anyone not on social media can participate by emailing their photo to HealthyAir@pima.gov. Participants may submit one photo per day. The community can take part in judging the week of Oct. 5 when the top photos will be posted on PDEQ’s website to receive votes. The contest winner will be announced Oct. 19.#ThisIsCleanAir Photo Contest

“Chances are, you breathe in about 3,000 gallons of air every day, whether or not the air is clean,” said Karen Wilhelmsen, PDEQ Program Manager. “There are lots of ways that air gets polluted and just as many actions we can take to help keep it healthy. Some sources of air pollution, such as the wildfires that caused multiple bad air days this summer, are difficult to control. However, we have the power to make choices every day to lower pollution levels for healthier air to breathe,” Wilhelmsen said.

PDEQ is requesting that Pima County residents, 16 years of age and older, send photos representing at least one clean air action related to transportation with a short caption providing the number of miles not driven to improve air quality. Additional challenge details are available here. The focus of this first #ThisIsCleanAir challenge is how community members can get from one place to another in a healthy air way. Future challenges will focus on other actions that can be taken to keep the air clean.

The “cream of the crop” photos, chosen by PDEQ staff, will be placed on PDEQ’s website for a community-wide vote. The winner will receive a $50 gift card to help support a local downtown business.

PDEQ’s #ThisIsCleanAir Challenge has great potential to inspire community-wide actions for keeping the air clean. For more information regarding local air quality and the #ThisIsCleanAir Photo Challenge, visit www.pima.gov/HealthyAir.
