    NRP Facility

Congratulations to RWRD’s Conveyance Division-CIP Group on its Tres Ríos Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) Nutrient Recovery Project (NRP), which received the National Award of Merit in the Water/Wastewater category from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). DBIA’s National Award Merit is an annual award given to projects that exemplify the principles of “Design-Build Done Right.” Design Build Project Delivery is a single contract managed by the owner with a single point of responsibility. The designer and contractor work together from the beginning, as a team, providing unified project recommendations to fit the owner’s budget.

RWRD collaborated with Wisconsin-based Schwing Bioset, a company that pioneers and develops high-performance material handling solutions that offer a phosphate and nitrogen recovery technology. The NRP involved designing and constructing a nutrient recovery facility to reduce operations and maintenance costs. It will also increase the nutrient recovery capacity through the utilization of waste activated sludge pretreatment process at the Tres Ríos WRF. The process can also prevent the buildup of struvite scale in the treatment equipment and improve dewaterability in biosolids.

The success of the NRP highlights not only an extraordinary project, but also how a project team went well beyond achieving cost, schedule, and quality goals, demonstrating unique applications of design-build practices. The NRP began May 10, 2018, with a contract price of $7.5 million and ended July 29, 2020, with a final cost of $7.4 million. $100,000 below budget!
